Paolo Woods

Paolo Woods is a photographer who teaches you about what the world can look like. The man in this image is bathing in crude oil, the photographer's caption is below. Please look at his extended project on oil, it's just amazing.

598. AZERBAIJAN / Baku / 13 March 2003

A man takes a bath in black gold. In Baku The 'Naftalan' clinic offers crude oil baths as a cure for arthritis, rheumatism, spondylitus, eczema, sciatica, infertility of the ovaries and radiculitis. Somehow the people of Baku seems convinced that oil will resolve all their problems. Oil has always played a main role in the history of the city; from when it propelled the Zoroastrian temples that Marco Polo speaks about to the first pipelines build here by the Nobel brothers in 1873. After the year of soviet dominance now it is the turn of the western companies to heavily invest on the shores of the Caspian sea.

Scientists tell us things we already know

"Last year, researchers studied 34 students at the University of Virginia, taking them to the base of a steep hill and fitting them with a weighted backpack. They were then asked to estimate the steepness of the hill. Some participants stood next to friends during the exercise, while others were alone.

The students who stood with friends gave lower estimates of the steepness of the hill. And the longer the friends had known each other, the less steep the hill appeared."

Good Feminism and Susan Boyle

photo: britney spears by david lachapelle

"Susan will probably win Britain's Got Talent. She will be the little munter that could sing, served up for the British public every Saturday night. Look! It's "ugly"! It sings! And I know that we think that this will make us better people. But Susan Boyle will be the freakish exception that makes the rule. By raising this Susan up, we will forgive ourselves for grinding every other Susan into the dust. It will be a very partial and poisoned redemption. Because Britain's Got Malice. Sing, Susan, sing - to an ugly crowd that doesn't deserve you."

The Real Costs

The Real Costs is a firefox plug-in to calculate the environmental cost of travel, but I think the plan is to add even more to it. As it stands, it works with a number of travel websites and consolidators, like Orbitz.com and United.com.

Michael Mandiberg can collect his prize for being the artist I know that's actually made something useful.
